Definition and origins

The garden bench is very similar in shape to the classic bench, it can be provided or not with a backrest and made with different materials. The origin of the garden bench dates back to a long time ago, since it is one of those 'historical' elements that have always been part of the garden furniture. Its function is to allow you to sit and admire the surrounding garden: after all, even today the bench is also a piece of furniture in public spaces, where people have the opportunity to sit down to be in the company of friends in the park or to to relax.

Features and materials: wood

Those who deal with outdoor furniture always create new models capable of innovating the basic structure, which is essentially composed of a seat, possibly a backrest, a support that supports everything. Wood is one of the materials mainly used because it can be worked in the most varied ways. It offers, in its natural state, different colors, and is an element not 'foreign' to nature. The seats of a bench are two or three; the version without backrest could be even less comfortable, because there is no support, while the one with backrest allows you to sit more comfortably. Different types of wood are used to make the benches, each of which has very specific characteristics that make it different from the other. The only treatment that, in some cases, can be performed is to apply a natural waterproofing oil, so that the rain does not damage it.

Wood and metal

Basically it was decided to use the same materials that are used for the construction of benches to be used in public parks, because it was noted how resistant they are not only to atmospheric agents, but to the wear and tear of time. The bench structure can be in metal or wood; metal is generally chosen, because the wooden benches are the result of craftsmanship, and this also results in a slightly higher cost.

The stone

Stone is another classic material, mainly used in varieties with a very light color. Unlike the wooden ones, this model, due to its weight, is difficult to move. Therefore, once you have decided where to place it, it is not advisable to have second thoughts. The stone benches recall a bit the model of the benches of the great villas of the rich gentlemen of the past, elegant and sober in their essential style: one stone slab as a support base and two underlying it to support it. Today it is perhaps the least used model, precisely because of the difficulty of moving around, as the outdoor space is now as intensely experienced as the interior and often people prefer to change the furniture to make it more modern.

Modern facilities

The bench, in the contemporary version, can also be entirely made of metal; this gives it a modern, essential, simple and very rigorous look. A perfect combination is the one that is established between teak and aluminum: the shape itself contributes to determining the modernity of the structure, with simple wooden slats, juxtaposed together, for the seat, the absence of the backrest and four simple feet to support it. The height from the ground of a bench is roughly always the same, even taking into account different models. A new entry, certainly still little used, is the plastic bench: it follows an often unusual design line, in which the shape does not seem to resemble a classic bench, but the function is the same. Objects that are transformed, in your garden, into works to be admired and capable of arousing the attention of friends, are mainly made in white or in very bright shades.

Other special versions

Some versions are even stackable, to allow you to buy a larger number and then ensure that they take up little space when you have to store them in the garage. The more particular versions offer these benches also in the illuminated variant, that is, the same bench acts as a seat but also as a lamp. An undoubtedly original idea that will complement the garden decor with a touch of fantasy. The modern bench can also be improved through the use of a cushion; the basic structure is made of wrought iron and the seat is completed with a rather high cushion to make it even more comfortable. The only drawback is that, if you leave the pillow outside, it will be irreparably damaged in the rain, so it would be advisable to have a bench in the garden where you can store it every evening.

Choice of model

When you visit an outdoor furniture shop, you will certainly be surprised at how many models of benches you can buy. The sector is one of those that every year offers new models every year, so that even the garden is a space with its own identity. For those who want to customize this item it is good to choose it in the wood or aluminum version, as it can be painted more easily.

Garden furniture: garden bench

An almost indispensable piece of furniture for your outdoor space is the garden bench, a cousin of the more classic bench that we also find in public parks.

The garden bench, however, may not have a backrest at times, often when placed near stone ovens or barbecues and thus re-proposes a somewhat country style.

The origin of the garden bench dates back to a long time ago, since it is one of those 'historical' elements that have always been part of the garden furniture.

Its function?

It does not change since its birth; the bench is often placed near the most representative spaces of the garden because it allows you to admire them
